Self-locking vertical bike mount

A compact, tool-free vertical bike storage system: a spring-loaded snap-lock clamps the wheel at the rim, installed with adhesive backing. No drilling, no fasteners.

Section A-A, The product

A tool-free vertical bike mount

SnapMount is a compact, tool-free vertical bicycle storage system. Two identical units clamp the wheel at its rim with a spring-loaded snap-lock, supporting the bike at its center of mass so the only load is gravity into the floor. It installs with high-bond adhesive backing, so there is no drilling and no damage to the wall.

Why I made it

Storage that does not fight you

Bikes get stored where floor space is tight, but conventional hooks, racks, and stands tend to be unstable, awkward to load, and rough on the bike or the wall. Most vertical mounts need drilling, tools, and careful alignment, and few offer any locking or quick release. SnapMount targets a mount that is secure, quick to load and unload, damage-free, and completely tool-free.

Section C-C, Design process

Engineering the snap-lock

The design centers on a spring-loaded locking arm inside a fixed chassis and a rotating chassis that pivots on a hinge. Pushing the wheel in deflects the locking arm; once the rim seats between the rubber clamping pads, the springs snap the arm back into the locked position. An internal hinge stop caps rotation at 30 degrees for consistent, repeatable engagement, and a side button releases it.

Section D-D, Technical

Inside the assembly

A sectioned view of a single unit shows the snap-lock internals: the spring-loaded locking arm and its axis, the hinge axis, the two compression springs, and the fixed and rotating clamping pads that capture the rim automatically on insertion.

Section E-E, Simulation and material

Loads and materials

The chassis is structurally reinforced to carry the dynamic load of a mounted bike. Clamping pads use a vibration-dampening, high-friction rubber to protect the rim and resist slip, and each unit mounts with 3M VHB high-bond adhesive for a fastener-free, damage-free hold on both vertical and horizontal surfaces.

Section F-F, Finished

Built and mounted

In use, one unit mounts on the wall and a second on the floor, spaced so the bike hangs vertically with its weight passing straight into the floor. Loading and releasing is a single tool-free motion, with no wall damage and no permanent fixtures.
